Questions Interviewers Should Stop Asking

Interview questions you wish interviewers would stop asking, and what we truly think…

1. What would your dream job be?

If you were feeling a little down about your career, this one is great at finishing you off. I’m applying for a part-time assistant job in Belgium and you really are asking me that question?

My answer : I would like a job that will allow me to balance my work and family life while making me feel useful and appreciated.

What I think : My dream job would involve being my own boss, being creative, not having any employee (other than maybe my husband), working from home (cabin on top of a mountain).

2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

What I think : Not here. Galloping on a horse in the middle of nowhere with a cowgirl’s hat on. What am I cooking for dinner tonight?

Another mood-killer… Are you also going to ask me if 5 years ago, I thought I would be where I am today? Do you mind if I scream for a second?

My answer : Hopefully here. I hope to have built on my skills and gained more responsibility within this company. I’m eager to eventually take on a leadership role.

3. Tell me about the position you are applying for.

What I think : Since you just showed up, do not know where you are and what you are doing, let me read the job description to you. By the way, my name is Valerie and we are in 2023.

My answer : I’m applying for the budget technician position. This job grabbed my attention because I am looking for an opportunity that lets me exercise my skill with numbers and eye for detail. I feel this position will allow me to succeed because my interpersonal skills help me establish meaningful relationships with customers.

4. Do you enjoy working in a team?

What I think : It depends on my teammates. I despise some of my old colleagues… I am an introvert and love being alone.

My answer : I get along well with people. I enjoy working in teams because we are so much more creative together. Different team members bring different perspectives and in the end, the quality of work is superior.

5. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

What I think : I am reliable and hard working. I am also a grouchy bitch and occasionally get in fights.

My answer : I am reliable and hard-working. I’m also a perfectionist and I have trouble saying no to others.

6. Do you have any questions for us?

What I think : Nope, I just want to get out of here and take my shoes off.

My answer : What type of skills is your team missing that you’re looking to fill with a new hire?

I’m such a hypocrite. You probably are too! Best time to look for a job is when you don’t need one!
